How much does a magazine ad cost?

Well, it should be stated that this question is indeed somewhat vague and can be interpreted in a number of ways. One way it could be construed is as a query that seeks to know how much magazine ads usually cost. Another way is as one that desires to know exactly how one would go about finding out the cost of placing an ad in any given magazine. I am inclined to think that the query is primarily concerned with this area and, as such, will simply address the latter.

To find out the cost of placing an ad in a specific magazine, one need only request a media kit of the publication in which one is interested. A media kit will provide a holistic view on the magazine’s primary reader demographic, circulation, distribution, editorial calendar, etc. Most importantly, the media kit is where you will find the ad rates or rate card which spells out the ad rates per ad, per dimension, and per page. There will also be ad rates for special placements such as covers, “island spreads” (tri-fold spreads), TOC (ads next to the Table of Contents), “blow ins” ( 4″ X 6″ cards that are stuffed into the magazine after stitching and trimming), “stitch ins” ( 4″ X 6″ cards that are bound into the spine during the stitching process), etc. In essence, magazine media kits are designed for prospective advertisers and are the primary tool that magazine publishers utilize for advertising procurement.
