MAGAZINE DOWNLOAD CATALOG
Magazine Startup Information
All of the downloads on this site are in PDF format. I often get asked if any are available in book format. Well, the answer is yes. The Magazine Sales Rep Directory is currently available as a download and in book format via Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Magazine-Sales-Rep-Directory/dp/1439203083/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220337843&sr=1-1
The Magazine Offset Press Directory will be available in book format in February/March. Other titles that will appear in book format in the coming months are: The Magazine Media Kit Manual, The Magazine Printing Quote Brief and How to Start a Magazine on a Shoestring. The other titles will remain in downloadable format only. Before ordering any title, pleasure check the availability status. I have provided an estimated date of availability for all the downloads but most will be ready prior to the date posted. Many of the new titles that are not yet listed on this site will be available in PDF format only. Why you ask? Well, there are a number of reasons.
First, providing magazine publishing information in a downloadable format is more cost efficient and allows me to provide the information at a much cheaper price since there’s no overhead. This, I might add, runs concurrent with my overall philosophy of providing information at a reasonable price.
Second, downloads can be updated very easily and quickly. This is very important since the magazine publishing industry is in a constant state of flux with the advent of new technologies to streamline the publication process and, as consequence, information can quickly become outdated. The traditional publishing route takes anywhere from 6 to 18 months to get a book published. So, by the time the book actually becomes available, it’s already outdated. This is quite apparent with the magazine publishing books on Amazon.com as the most recent book on the subject is already over 3 years old! That is, except mine which was released on July 10, 2008.
Third, PDF is a very flexible format. With PDF files, it is easy to include charts, graphs, designs, and color images. For example, in the Magazine Media Kit Manual, I have included 15 different media kits that I evaluate for strengths and weaknesses. If I were to include the same number of color pages and images in a book format, the cost would be totally prohibitive, thus running counter to my philosophy and negating the very reason why I created this site in the first place. However, with a PDF, including such content is not problematic at all and due to the fact that a PDF is a compact file, I can have documents with 300 pages or more and it is still easily downloadable.
Lastly, we live in a world where information has become instantaneous and many of us, especially those brought up in the internet age; have become accustomed to the rapid acquisition of information. PDF downloads allow for anyone to quickly access the information that they need about magazine publishing in a matter of minutes; without the worries of shipping or the delays that are sometimes associated with it.
So, there you have it. I’m really interested to know what you think about the downloads available on this site. Please let me know if you were satisfied, have any concerns or any suggestions on how I might improve any of them; whatever they may be, I’m all ears! Take a minute to visit the Feed Back page or Message Board and share your thoughts. Thanks!
