When someone puts a sample issue together, what do they use for sample ads? Would you just use high resolution scans of real ads? Or maybe even change the text of existing ads to fit the magazine?

Craig:

Well, I wouldn't recommend that you take that route! You (and your magazine) could have some serious liability and legal problems. There's a better way to make your mockup not appear to be starving for ads; well, sort of. I'm referring of course to PSAs. We've all seen them. Public Service Announcements are used by just about every association, NGO, municipal, state and governmental agency. The best part is that they are absolutely FREE! PSAs are not only available for magazines and newspapers but for radio and TV as well. Practically every magazine, at one time or another, has used a PSA. Whenever you see one in a high end publication, it's because they were unable to fill that ad space and, as a consequence, opted to run a PSA. You can do the same. I've provided some links to some of the sites that I like. The first one, The Ad Council, is probably the best and most popular of them all. They have PSAs in Adobe PDF format low/high resolution for just about any trim size you can think of. If you want an Ad with different specs than is available at their site, just email them and they will send you the ad of your choice in the specs you desire. Be sure to check the resolution of the ads before downloading and know the linescreen that your offset printer is using for your job. That's it! Good luck with your publication!
