I am looking to start a magazine here in Jamaica. I am curious about how other magazines obtain celebrities for their content or cover pages.

Hey Diodante!
Thanks so much for your post. So, you would like to know how you can get celebrity images for your magazine? Well, that's a good question and I'm happy to say that there are a few ways you can do just that without spending a lot of money! Let's take a look at three in particular:

1)Stock Photography
2)Publicists
3)Movie Studios

1) One easy way to get good images of entertainers is through stock photography houses. Stock photos can be thought of as general situational images. These are images that magazines utilize to run with their editorial content. If you have a section in your magazine that deals with finance or money matters for instance, you may want to include an image related to the subject matter of your article. So, you might want to incorporate an image of a bank, ATM machine, or paper currency. Such images can be easily obtained via stock photography houses. Some of the generic stock photography websites that I happen to like are: www.shutterstock.com and www.photos.com.

Both sites are royalty free, meaning that for most images you pay only a flat fee for use of the images on their site. Shutterstock charges a $249 per month subscription fee while Photos.com has a $99 per month fee for unlimited download of images! Now, this may seem expensive but believe me, it's really a good deal in comparison to some of the others. Although these two primarily focus on generic images, they do have a few images of celebrities and athletes as well.

Now, there are some stock photography houses that deal primarily with images of professional entertainers, athletes, celebrities, etc. Some of the stock photo houses in this category are: Getty Images, Corbis, Impact, amongst others. Getty Images (www.gettyimages.com) is probably one of the most popular and posseses a library of millions of images that grows each day by some 52,000! Corbis (www.corbis.com) also has a great selection of images as well. However, the price for one image of, let's say, Beyonce will likely cost in the neighborhood of $245 to $345 dollars. If this is outside of your budget then you may want to consider going another route.

2) A less expensive route to getting images of your favorite celebrity would be to contact their publicist directly. Most publicists will have a number of head shots and other photos that are routinely offered to the media. You will have to do a search to ascertain what publicists represent which celebrities. The publicist will undoubtedly want to view a copy of your publication and the catch is that there is certainly no guarantee that your request will be honored.

3) Another option is to obtain images via movie studios. All major movie studios maintain websites for their upcoming movie schedules where media can download images, free of charge, of stock photos and one sheets/key art teasers. One sheets and key art teasers are the movie posters that you see for upcoming movies. These sites will also have press releases and often times interviews with the film directors or key actors in the film. All for free!! What do you need to do to get access? Well, you will need to contact the movie studio of your choice, tell them the name of your magazine and request media access. Send them some copies of your publication along with your media kit. That's it! One such site that has excellent images is Image.net (www.image.net) Universal Studio maintains its Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer movie lineup there. This site also has images of TV shows for all the major TV networks in the US, videos, concerts, sporting events, domestic and international movie festivals, etc.. All for FREE!! You pay absolutely nothing! I'm sure you would agree, it doesn't get any better than that! (smile)

Ok Diodante, I hope this helps. Good luck with your magazine and if it's not too much to ask, I would love to see a copy once you get it up and running!

All the best!

Shawn
